Tell ‘Em
Zap Town Interview with Danielle Look
DL: This is some form of a concept album, would you agree?
GG: No. Not at all.
JB: I thought it was.
GG: What’s the concept?
JB: (laughs) I’m waitin’ on you to tell me.
DL: So maybe you’re not trying to tell a specific story through a series of songs, but rather guide the listener through a range of emotions?
GG: (looking at the floor, scratching his head) Yea. It’s like, in talking with a dude he’ll tell me about some shit going on in his life. And I’m like “Damn. This story needs to be told.” The songs aren’t about any one person in particular, but really just feelings we can all connect to.

Grey Granite and J. Brookinz drop FREEMix of “Colorful Mask” featuring alpha.live:
In February, Grey Granite and J. Brookinz unveiled their foray into electropop, Lust Poisons Pride, and garnered quite a bit of attention from media outlets such as: Sound Verite, Loyal KNG, The Musical Family Tree, Bringing Down the Band, Metromix Indianapolis, and Nuvo. Carrying on from the album’s initial success, the Heavy Gun duo has teamed up with the almighty emcee, alpha.live, for a remix of “Colorful Mask” from LPP. This is the first time that these three have collaborated since the infamous original version of “The Bar”. To make the release even sweeter, Heavy Gun Recordings is giving it to you for FREE!

Underneath It All
Thank You BTAM
The first song I recorded for Lust Poisons Pride was Lay You Down. For years I have been recording hip hop songs in the closet of one of my closest friends BTAM and for years he was living in the same very comfortable apartment. But, when the time came to record the first song on LPP he had moved out of that apartment and back in with his Mom and Pops to save some money and it was always a full house over there. I would go over to this his extremely cramp room pretty late at night after work and record in his closet while he worked the boards aka Pro Tools and a Mini Mac.
When I went into the booth aka closet that night with a way crazy ass beat that I made (ps I am not suppose to play the role of producer that’s brookinz job) and even more way crazy lyrics and singing I was really unsure if he would take me serious and record me. There have been MANY fights in the studio and I didn’t expect any different this time especially. Sometimes Btam doesn’t get what I am trying to do until its all done. Sometimes I don’t get that what I’m doing doesn’t work until its all done and exhausted Btam say, “I told you so”. This time I was pretty unsure of how things would go…
For weeks I had the song Lay You Down stuck in my head, and it played over and over and over and I’m not taking about how it would and should sound when I had it all done. I was hearing a fully finished mixed and mastered song. I wasn’t sure if I could get Btam to go along with me far enough to get to that point or if I would get shot down with the opening hum of “I wanna Lay You Down…” I remember saying, “Btam just trust me on this one, its going to be different- way different”. And he was down- To my surprise he was into it!
Shortly after that song was recorded Btam moved out and into his own place and things ran smoothly. Btam put in really late hours recording the songs on Lust Poisons Pride. Some songs he would have to record more than once, if I didn’t like the way something came out I would go back in and do it over. Btam has a really good ear and he’s a technical genius when it comes to audio. I really wish I could pay him what he deserves for the work he has put in on Lust Poisons Pride. One day- SOON.
SIDENOTE: We recoded another song that night called “All Clear” that didn’t make the cut. In fact we recorded it several times and it got cut seconds before we sent the final version to the distributor.
Thank You Btam, Lust Poisons Pride would not have been made without you.

Not of This World
Thank you Tyler Bowman
I recorded Colorful Mask to a beat by a producer named ComDot but, I was suppose to rap on the beat- NOT sing (I just do what the music tells me…) So, I had a song that I really felt needed to be on the album but it didn’t have a beat. I thought this would be an easy fix (in my head) I thought J. Brookinz would be able to create the music for this song no prob! Well, time kept ticking and J. Brookinz was busy working on other projects and when the time came to turn the album into the distribution company we still didn’t have Colorful Mask! The two days before we needed to turn it in I finally got J. Brookinz to open the file and listen to the song. He immediately said I can make a beat out of this! He told me that I was singing it in a certain harmonic pattern that would be better played out with a guitar. We had been (well… he had been) mixing down the songs for like two days so thought (I still think) he just didn’t want to do it… Brookinz was like just put it on the next album. I was like HELL NO. And, we fought for like 30 minutes about it. Brookinz told me to call Tyler.
ENTER Tyler Bowman
I meet Tyler on the set of The Road video shoot, his good friend Nate asked him to help be a second shooter that day. He told me in was in a few bands so I said we should link up and work on some things, we did but never finished anything (YET). Anyway I sent an emergency call in and Tyler was 100% down to work on the song the next morning. Side Note: Tyler is the bass player in a badass band called Pravada. I showed up at 11am with a laptop and my M-Audio box. He plugged in his bass up right there in the living room of his pops house, listened to the accapella and he started to play along with the melody of my voice. I am sure he has never been under that type of, on the spot pressure to produce music like that but he came through! Tyler, cool as always said “I hope that works man…”
Thanks Tyler, you really helped make Lust Poisons Pride what it needed to be.

Teenage Song Lyrics
I never been here but don’t tell me the way
I’ve got this thing in my heart telling me to stay
I never been here but don’t tell me to Stay
I’ve got this thing in my heart talking me away
Don’t know me all know is my name
Things are not the same
Things are not the same
I’m going to walk this road I chose

This week sees the release of Grey Granite’s “Lust Poisons Pride” on iTunes.
Grey has been steadily making an impact on Indy’s scene as a performer, tastemaker and blogger. “Lust Poisons Pride” is a great step forward — from the opening buzz of “Off Safety” to the undeniably sleazy bounce of “Lay You Down,” you know this album is different from anything that’s been released from this city.
Grey has established his own lane. His music skips and jumps from genre to genre effortlessly. Nothing feels forced; I’d even say that Grey and J. Brookinz have fully found their sound with “LPP.”
The year-plus they spent working on this album is evident. Brookinz’ production is stellar. The sonic palette he chose gave Grey the space he needed to create an album that could change a lot more minds about what Indy’s music scene is capable of doing.
There’s also a streaming link available on Soundcloud for “Lust Poisons Pride.” Get that, man!
